Wondering what are the best woods for woodworking?

There are too many different types of wood to even begin to talk about BUT there are commonly used in woodworking, each with their own unique properties and characteristics that make them awesome for different types of projects. If youre interested doing a custom woodworking project and you want to at least start with the basics, here is a solid starting point for you to consider:

  1. Oak: is a strong and durable wood that is commonly used for furniture making. It is also a popular choice for flooring and cabinetry due to its attractive grain patterns and natural warmth.

  2. Maple: is a hard, dense wood that is often used for cutting boards, kitchen utensils, and other items that require durability and resistance to wear and tear. It is also a popular choice for furniture due to its attractive grain patterns and light color.

  3. Walnut: is a dark, rich wood that is often used for fine furniture and cabinetry. It has a natural warmth and beauty that makes it a popular choice for high-end woodworking projects.

  4. Cherry: is a popular choice for furniture and cabinetry due to its attractive color and grain patterns. It is also a relatively soft wood, which makes it easy to work with using hand tools.

  5. Mahogany: is a high-quality hardwood that is often used for furniture and musical instruments. It is prized for its rich, deep color and attractive grain patterns, as well as its durability and resistance to decay.

Really id suggest doing lots of research, going in to a shop (or coming to see me) and see the different wood types under natural light vs on a screen, touch it and really spend some time with it. It really will depend on the specific project and the desired aesthetic and functional qualities of the finished product….and dont forget about durability, workability, and overall appearance.
